USMC Tech. Sgt. Frederick "DIck" Dashiell

  1. – War correspondent and former Associated Press editor
  2. – Assigned to the 3rd Marine Division on Iwo Jima
  3. – Wrote 81 front line reports on a battered portable typewriter in a foxhole

Frederick K. “Dick” Dashiell left his job as an editor for the Associated Press to report on the War in the Pacific from the front lines. He was often seen banging out stories on his portable typewriter from a foxhole and by the end of the war, had filed 81 firsthand reports. Much of what we know about what happened to the 3rd Marine Division on Iwo Jima comes from Dashiell and his fellow correspondents.
